As part of its exhibition Resistencia. Perú, 1970-1975, the SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art, the Department of Anthropology of the Université de Montréal and the Réseau d’études latino-américaines (Latin American Studies Network) (RÉLAM) are pleased to present a conversation with the director and photographer Carlos Ferrand Zavala.

The exhibition unveils images, photographs and films that date back to a pivotal period in Peruvian history: the great reforms initiated by the military government of Juan Velasco Alvarado. Until then, Peru remained a very divided country, the social fracture inherited from the Spanish colonization having lasted. Born in Lima in a wealthy family, Carlos Ferrand Zavala dedicates himself to meet the other Peru. He puts this reality and the persons behind it into an image, giving them a face.

While Peru has recently celebrated its 200 years of independence and simultaneously elected a President from a rural community of the Andes to lead the country, a space is finally created for the other Peru that Carlos Ferrand Zavala has captured through his work. His images as well as his own process finally find the place which they deserve.
