Katherine Zien wins CALACS’ Best Book Award 2018

Congratulations to Professor Katherine Zien from McGill University, who won CALACS’ Best Book Award for her book Sovereign Acts: Performing Race, Space, and Belonging in Panama and the Canal Zone, published with Rutgers Univfersity Press, 2017.

Sovereign Acts presents a strong narrative and convincing argument that contributes to understanding the Canal Zone, the performance of sovereignty, and the constructions of race, space, and belonging in Panama. In particular, the jury commends the original book’s insights on the relationship between the United States and Panama, as well as the accessibility and quality of its writing.
