Relam's Greetings Message for the 2021-2022 Academic Year

Greetings,

The RELAM team wishes you a wonderful 2021-2022 academic year, which is promising to be remarkable despite (and in some ways because of) the pandemic that still affects us. The RELAM, in collaboration with its university partners from Montreal and the surrounding area, will for an eightieth year continue its mission of disseminating knowledge pertaining to Latin America.

Unlike what has been the case in previous years, the RELAM will organize few events for 2021-2022 and will not hold its traditional back-to-school activities, given the current precarious health context. One activity, however, will happen on October 8 around the exhibition of the work of Carlos Ferrand, filmmaker and photographer who is currently presenting an exhibition called "resistance. Peru, 1970-1975” at the SBC Gallery in Montreal (https://www.sbcgallery.ca/carlos-ferrand-zavala). The event will be in-person at UdeM and will take place on October 8 - details are in the attached invitation. Places are limited (registration required), and please note that you are also invited to visit the exhibition. Carlos Ferrand will be there at different times.

This year, the RELAM will also continue its mandate of disseminating information about events related to Latin American studies, many of which will take place virtually this year in Latin America and elsewhere. In this context, we encourage you to inform us of any events to which you are associated, or which would be relevant to the network's mission. The RELAM will thus be able to alert its members to these initiatives in order to (among other things) increase participation, or help you with some aspects of the organization of those events.

In addition, the RELAM 2022 student conference will take place at UdeM. The success of the 2021 edition, held virtually, shows how important this activity is and that we know how to adapt.

Finally, some changes have taken place within the RELAM Executive Committee. Jean-François Mayer (Political Science, Concordia), co-director of RELAM, will be replaced by Katherine Zien (English Department, McGill). We would like to thank Jean-François for his unwavering commitment, and we are extremely happy to have the chance to count on the dynamism and expertise of Katherine to ensure the sustainability of RELAM. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gustavo Andrade (MA student in Political Science, Concordia), the RELAM coordinator, for his consistently reliable and efficient work.

With our best,

Ingrid Hall and Katherine Zien
